Ocimum x citriodorum
As its name implies, Lemon Basil has a delightful lemony aroma and flavor. This narrow leaf Heirloom basil is native to India, Ancient Persia and southeast Asia. It is an attractive, spreading silvery-green leaf plant whose aroma and flavor is great for tea, chicken, fish, vegetables, herb vinegars and even for potpourris. Lemon basil is a staple in Lao, Persian, Arabian, Indonesian and Thai cuisine to name a few. Lemon basil is the only basil used much in Indonesian cuisine, where it is called kemangi. Lemon basil is also used extensively in Lao curries, stews, and stir-fried dishes as it is the most commonly used type of basil in Laos. The flowering stalks are not only delicious for cooking, but they can also be added to bouquets to lend a wonderful lemony fragrance to your floral arrangements! We added this wonderful heirloom variety to our plant sale for the first time in 2014 after many years of growing it in our own garden, and it was by far the best selling, most enjoyed basil variety of the dozen plus varieties that we had available! It was such a hit that we decided it had to be a definite permanent addition to the Rainbow Seeds online seed inventory!
