Beta-Vulgaris This great variety of chard has nice thick dark leaves. It is our very favorite green variety Heirloom Chard! This Beautiful Heirloom Variety was introduced in 1934 and is a very vigorous grower that is very tolerant to heat and cold. With enough moisture this plant can be grown all year long without bolting. It is a very easy to grow plant and will do very well in your garden or in containers. You can plant this variety outside very early in the spring. Up to 3-4 weeks before the average last frost date. Soak your seeds in water prior to planting. The chard seed is actually a dried fruit that contains multiple seeds, so it is very important to thin your plants. If multiple sprouts emerge from your single seed, thin right away to a single sprout. It grows best in full sun, but can do ok in partial shade.
